The Juilliard School, New York

Since its inception more than 100 years ago the Julliard School has been in the forefront in providing quality education in the performing artists. The School was founded in 1905 as The Institute of Musical Art. In 1946 it changed its name to Julliard School of Music. With the addition of the Dance division in 1951 and the Drama division in 1968, it moved to the Lincoln Centre and changed its name to simply “The Juilliard School”

The Juilliard added its path breaking Juilliard institute for jazz studies in 2003 offering for the first time an undergraduate program in Jazz studies.

Informally known just as "Juilliard” this exceptional institution trains in drama, music and dance. To any aspiring artist anywhere in the world getting an admission into Juilliard means only one thing - that he has got himself into the best school in the world to enhance and nurture his skills.

Juilliard is located on the Upper West Side in New York City. The school has approximately 800 students in both the Undergraduate and Post Graduate programs. Divided into three groups there are around 600 students in the Music program. Around 90 each in the dance and Drama programs.

The quality education provided by Juilliard attracts students from all round the world. Nearly 25% of the student body are international students.

Fees for the 9 month academic year:

The tuition fees is approx $32000
Costs of Room and board -$12000
Books, miss expenses- $4000

The school pursues a policy where achieving the highest standards of artistic potential should be realized. As such all students are encouraged to apply even if they do not have the ability to pay the fees. It must be mentioned that applying for financial aid will not affect the chances of being selected for admission. In fact 80% of all students in Juilliard avail of financial aid.

The school also offers a host of opportunities to its students to avail loans. In order to provide the best service to its students, the school is a Direct Loan School. That means that all Federal loans are instead of being funded through banks are funded directly through the Federal Government.

Curriculum and Admission

The Juilliard School has 3 divisions. Music, drama and Dance. In addition all students go through a pretty intensive Liberal arts course.

Admissions into Juilliard are not very easy and the path to securing one is to qualify in the admission audition. You will be requested to play the instrument you choose for your study here. Students wanting to pursue their studies in Singing will be asked to demonstrate their voice skills. A pre defined music selection will be given for the potential student to perform

Situated in the heart of the performing world in New York City, the Juilliard is by itself a favoured tourist attraction. The School has numerous programs featuring dance, drama and music and open to the public.

The list of distinguished alumni of The Juilliard School is very long! Names who immediately spring to mind are William Hurt, Val Kilmer, Kevin Kline, Laura Linney, Winton Marsalis, Christopher Reeve, Ving Rhames, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and Robin Williams.
