How to become a Counselor

While counselors in some states may practice with only a bachelor's degree, most often, counselors hold a master's or PhD. Coursework for counselors often includes psychology, sociology, child studies, and statistics.

The state, as well as the specific branch of counseling determines licensing and certification requirements.

School counselors generally must hold a master's degree as well as a State school counseling certification. Depending on the state, a school may also require a teaching certificate as well as some teaching experience.

The vast majority of states require counselors based outside of schools to hold a master's degree and some form of licensure in their particular area of practice. In order to become licensed, one must typically acquire two years of supervised clinical experience and complete a State-recognized exam. In order to maintain a counseling license, it is necessary to update one's education on an annual basis.

Some counselors choose to become certified as well. The National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. grants general practice credentials. Many fields of counseling have their own specific certification processes. While certification is often voluntary and separate from State licensing, it can improve job prospects. Also, certain fields, such as rehabilitation counseling, are required by some states to have certification. Counseling certificates must be updated every five years either by testing or the completion of additional education credits.

In order to advance in the field, some counselors pursue doctoral degrees at some point in their career.
