How to become a Painter

The most popular way to become a painter is through working with an experienced painter as an apprentice or assistant where one can receive on the job training and instruction. There is a formal apprenticeship program for painters that consist of three - four years of on the job training, in addition to 144 hours of classroom tuition each year. During training, apprentices learn how to use color in harmony, utilize and upkeep their tools and equipment, how to prep surfaces for painting, techniques for preparation, mixing and matching paints, characteristics of various finishes, how to read blue prints, wood finishing and safety precautions. Generally, those interested in entering to a formal apprentice program must be at least 16 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

According to the US Labor Board there are also some organizations that offer training and certification to improve the skills of their workforce. Those interested in painting in an industrial environment can earn several formal titles/qualification from the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, such as coating applicators; this certification is called Protective Coating Specialist. These certification classes range from one day to several weeks.

Painters have the opportunity to advance to supervisory or estimating jobs with painting and decorating contractors. Many may choose to start their own companies. For those that wish to advance it is becoming crucial to be able to be bi-lingual, speaking both Spanish and English.

What does a Painter do?

House painters are responsible for the application of paint, stain, varnish and other finishes to homes and commercial locations. They also must select the correct paint or finish for the surface to be covered. Things they must consider are resilience, how easy the supplies are to handle, the technique of application, and the specification of the customer. It is important that the job is completed to the customer's specification so that the painter or painting company can build and maintain a solid reputation.

Many times a painter must also do a lot of preparation to the surfaces that the paint will be applied to in order to insure that the paint will adhere properly. This may include taking away old coats of paints or wall covering by sanding, stripping, wire coiffure, or water and abrasive blasting.

Other things that a painter may need to do in preparation for a painting job are to clean walls and trim to insure that there is not any dirt or grease on the surfaces, fill in nail holes and cracks usually with drywall mud, and locate any rough spots that may require sanding. Anytime sanding is required the painter must be sure to remove all sanding dust so that the dust will not be mixed in with the paint or stain that is being applied. Lastly, a painter must insure that the paint they are using is properly mixed and there may be times they that will require them to mix paints to produce different colors.

What skills or qualities do I need to become a Painter?

To become a successful and skilled painter one will need to be willing to work hard and be able to complete projects in a timely manner. For example, if the painter is working for a builder they must be on schedule because there are other trades scheduled to come in after the painter's job is complete, so if the painter is off schedule the whole project will be delayed and the schedules of the other skilled laborers will be compromised. Therefore the painter must be able to manage and coordinate projects effectively and constantly find ways to improve upon their performance. They must also be able to communicate effectively with their team members and customers to get the job done right!

Because painting is a physical job it is important that one be in good physical condition, be able to work well with their hands, have a good balance, have an aptitude for color coordination and pay attention to detail. A painter must also be able to manage and care for and maintain their supplies and equipment. A good painter must be able to provide a safe working environment and take the proper precautions to avoid excessive inhalation of paints and stains.

Generally, painters are paid by the job and not by the hour so the more efficient you become in your work the more you will be able to earn.
