The Immigration Enforcement Agency is a division of Homeland Security. An applicant is required to have a Bachelor's Degree; one in Criminal Justice or Homeland security would be most beneficial.

Physical requirements must also be met. All Immigration Agents must be physically fit due to the nature of the work. They are covered by the Mandatory Fitness Program for all law enforcement positions. An individual must pass a pre- employment physical examination. Before they can be appointed they must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician. The applicant will need to be able to perform physically demanding duties. There is also a medical examination that includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular and mobility of extremities and the examination must be given by an authorized government physician. The applicant must not have reached their 40th birthday prior to appointment to the job.
Agents are further required to undergo regular physical examinations. In the future Agents may be required to maintain a level of physical fitness in accordance with the standards and policies of the agency. Failure to maintain such a level of fitness could lead to removal from the position or other actions as may be specified in the program.
An Immigration Agent will be required to carry a firearm while performing the duties of their position. Therefore it is also mandatory they maintain firearm proficiency. Applicants must satisfactorily complete or have previously completed the firearms section of the Criminal Investigation Training Program at Glynco, Georgia.
Anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot legally possess a firearm or ammunition. Any candidate under consideration for a job as an Immigration Agent will be required to certify whether or not they have ever been convicted of such an offence. Any false or fraudulent information provided by an applicant is criminally punishable by fine and/or imprisonment.
